Celebrate Coffee's Health Benefits!

Celebrate Coffee

Coffee remains to be one of today's most popular drinks, with about half of all Americans drinking about 3.1 cups everyday! Being one of the most consumed drinks today, there has been extensive research conducted on the various effects and benefits that one may draw from it. You'd be glad to know that there is much to celebrate about coffee, especially when it comes to the many health benefits that it has to offer!

For instance, it was discovered that coffee contains high levels of phytonutrients, compounds which are essential to good health. Although other drinks, such as green tea, also contains these nutrients, coffee has the highest phytonutrient content among today's popular drinks!

And contrary to popular belief, it was also found that coffee contains properties which could help reduce the risk of developing stage 2 diabetes! According to The Coffee Science website, a study revealed that drinking up to 5 cups of coffee a day helps cut down your risk of suffering from this disease by 54% to 80%!  Of course, it would be best if coffee would be taken with minimal amounts of sugar and/or cream, as these ingredients will add extra calories to your drink.

The caffeine in coffee is also beneficial to health, as it can aid in exercise and physical activity. Drinking coffee right before a workout session can decrease the strain that you feel on your muscles. It also improves metabolism and endurance, as well as enhancing performance in brief physical activities.

Finally, coffee has also shown properties which may help to prevent the development of certain types of cancer in the body. A report done by CNN in the year 2010 states that coffee decreases the risk of developing cancer of the prostate, the colon, ans the liver, as well as slowing down the rate of liver cirrhosis.

How Coffee Can Help Boost Your Health

How Coffee Can Help Boost Your Health

Although drinks such as green tea seem to be the more popular health drink nowadays, studies show that coffee is another favorite drink which contains just as many health benefits! Coffee contains properties which help prevent the development of various ailments, including Alzheimer’s, Diabetes, Colon cancer, and heart disease. When taken in moderation and with minimal amounts of sugar and cream, coffee is filled with the all right nutrients to help boost your health!

Studies suggest that those who consume about three to five cups of coffee every day have about 65% less chance of developing Alzheimer’s disease later in life, in comparison to those who are not as fond of drinking coffee. These studies link coffee's ability to curb this disease to its high caffeine content. Caffeine is linked to the reduction of beta-amyloid, a protein which often deposits in the brains of those who struggle with Alzheimer's disease.

Clinical research also shows that drinking coffee may prevent the development of certain cancers in women. Those who consumed more than three cups of coffee per day had 50% of the risk of developing colon cancer. The risk of developing liver cancer was also reduced by more than 40%.  Further studies have also proven that coffee may also significantly reduce the chance of developing other cancers, such as endometrial, oral, and kidney cancers.

Lastly, drinking coffee on a regular basis can help lower the risk of developing type 2 diabetes! Believe it or not, a careful study conducted last 2006 revealed that those who drank coffee on a regular basis at any point in their lives were much less likely to suffer from this disease than those who do not drink coffee. This is because of coffee's high levels of antioxidants and minerals, which help regulate glucose metabolism and insulin levels.

Why You Should Consider Coffee-drinker as A Health Drink

Why You Should Consider Coffee-drinker as A Health Drink

Most people don't consider coffee to be one of the healthiest drinks, but I digress. Coffee really has a lot of health benefits to offer and shouldn't be counted out just yet. In fact, it contains various nutrients, such as ferulic acid, chologenic acid, and caffeic acid; all of which help boost one's resistance to diseases.

Theses are just a few of the many antioxidants that coffee has to offer. These special nutrients cleanse the body of harmful free radicals and minimize the damage they cause.

Although it was once liked to cause cancer, recent studies have proven that shown that Coffee actually provides the opposite effect. Coffee offers protection from certain cancers due to it's caffeic acid and chlorogenic acid content, two nutrients which are vital to the prevention of cancer.

The caffeic acid found in coffee also offers protection from Diabetes. This chemical regulates the body's blood sugar levels by lowering these levels and slowing the release of glycogen from the liver.

Coffee also promotes heart health by lowering the levels of LDL (or low density lipoprotien) cholesterol in the blood, ensuring a good flow of blood and oxygen. This prevents the formation of plaque on the artery walls of the heart an, in turn, lowers the risk for heart aliments such as atherosclerosis.

Another health benefit that you are sure to enjoy is the help that coffee provides in terms weight loss.  Drinking coffee increases thermogenesis, which helps the body burn more calories in a smaller amount of time.

Although other hot drinks, such as green tea, are more a more popular choice for those who are looking to improve their health, coffee is still a very viable option. When taken in the right amounts and with very minimal cream or sugar additives, coffee has much to offer and can definitely help you improve the condition of your health.

Is Low Acid Coffee Good for Your health?

Is Low Acid Coffee Good for Your health?

Coffee is by nature acidic, and although there is no naturally grown low-acid coffee the demand for coffee with lower acid content has opted many in the coffee growing community to create coffee alternatives for those suffering from gastrointestinal problems that prohibits coffee drinking. The industry for low acid coffee is with more people preferring a “healthier” way of enjoying their favorite drink.

Although no medical proof is presented that the acid in coffee contributes to the rise of any disease in the body, people with pre-existing conditions that are hypersensitive to the high acidity of coffee are well to benefit from its low-acid counterpart. This has prompted several studies to research about the potential of low-acid coffees. People who are prone to acidotic conditions or those with hyper sensitivity to acidic compounds may well find that low acid coffee is a good alternative when it comes to enjoying their favorite beverage. People who have been diagnosed with several gastrointestinal conditions have been advised to take coffee in moderation as it can serve as an aggravating factor for the onset of symptoms. Take note that many in the scientific community are quick to point out that coffee does not cause disease, its acidity merely provokes the symptoms of gastric problems that are sensitive to high pH. This means that a person with GERD may get the same results if they decided to eat foods rich in protein – which is also acidic in nature. Some coffee consumers who experience an awkward sensation from drinking coffee because of its acidity are well to take benefit from low-acid coffee. Low acid coffee has unique set of benefits compared to conventionally roasted coffee which is highly acidic in nature. This low acid coffee has been found to be a great alkalizing agent that may help in maintaining a healthy and balance pH level for all coffee drinkers. In the chemical composition of the traditional brewed coffee, a significant percentage of its buildups came from various natural acids. Although not all acids found in coffee are considered precipitating factors in triggering gastrointestinal acidity, still a portion of these acid compounds are common in the bean itself and may serve as a result of chemical reactions from roasting and brewing processes. These low acid coffees are prepared in many different ways. However, there are still more natural ways in lowering the acidity of coffee if one decides to apply commercially prepared acid neutralizing products for your brew. A cold brew helps prevent the onset of chemical reactions achieved by heating process. Also, adding a pinch of salt neutralizes the acidity of coffee.

How To Eliminate Bitterness In Coffee

How To Eliminate Bitterness In Coffee

Because coffee is made up of strong compounds, a slight yet strong bitter taste is usually experienced. This bitter taste is usually what makes the beverage unique and enjoyable for most. Bitter coffee may mean a lot of things. It may be attributed to a poorly blended or over roasted coffee, overused beans or the use of low grade coffee. With this, bitterness in coffee is generally perceived as an undesirable bitter taste. Mild bitterness helps blend the acid taste in coffee which is also included in its flavor component. On the other hand, extreme bitterness can create an imbalance in the flavoring aspect of the coffee and may produce an undesirable taste for drinkers. Scientific study has shown that the bitterness of coffee is a result of chemical reactions from the compounds found in the coffee and the compounds found in the circumvallate papillae or the back of the tongue.

The bitter taste of coffee is often confused by many with the astringency of coffee which is entirely different from each other. Studies have found that cholorgenic acid lactone is responsible in creating bitter taste and lactones and phenylindanes causes bitter taste from chemical reaction with the compounds found in circumvallate papillae. The production of the bitter compounds in the coffee that people drink determines how bitter the coffee will taste like. Also, bitterness of a coffee may depend on its temperature, amount of beans used and the blend of coffee. Surprisingly, commercial grade coffee has been found to produce lesser of these bitter compounds compared to brewed coffee when they are prepared with the same method. Studies have shown that the same process that creates a higher bitterness in brewed coffee decreases the amount of bitterness in instant coffee by up to 40%. The entire process of preparing the coffee affects the bitter compounds present in it. It was also shown that the use of distilled water in brewing process greatly reduces the amount of bitter compounds in the coffee particles. There is also a perceived difference between the bitter taste of coffee as it is enjoyed hot versus prepared using a cold process.

The use of hydrocolloids are also hypothesized to relieve the bitter taste of coffee. Compounds such as sucrose (C12H22O11), salt (NaCl) and citric acid (C6H8O7) are considered examples. Coffee bitterness may be altered and controlled depending on one’s preference. A medium roast when preparing coffee solids may be done. The solubility of coffee will greatly affect its amount of bitter compounds and medium roasted coffee contains lesser soluble compounds than high roasts. Also, studies have shown that the process of decaffeination also reduces the amount of bitter compounds in the coffee. The mineral influence of coffee before it is roasted can greatly affect its flavor and bitterness. Soaking fresh coffee beans in water a day before it is roasted will affect the amount of bitter compounds present and reduce the bitter taste of coffee once it is prepared. Lastly, using a coarse grinder will also decrease the bitterness by lowering the amount of soluble solids in the coffee preparation. The finer the coffee is the more soluble it becomes and the more bitter compounds are added to the brew.

Coffee Storage Myths Debunked

Coffee Storage Myths Debunked

Although most of us loves coffee so much, only few knows how it should be prepared. A lot of people have great misconceptions about coffee that ultimately skew its flavor or could ruin our gourmet experience. Surprisingly, coffee as one of the most consumed beverage is also one of the most misconceived. There are several confusions about coffee and the reality about this tasty beverage may just surprise you.

Coffees are brewed into its freshness. To maintain its goodness, the beans should be kept intact and only processed when a cup is about to enjoy. Coffee is ideally used up after two weeks it has been roasted to achieve the best aroma and flavor. Proper storage may be done for later use. One of the best kept secrets about keeping the freshness of the coffee is by maintaining the natural and essential oils in the coffee beans. These oils are the ones responsible in keeping the flavor concentrated and break down as it is brewed. To keep the freshness, it must be made sure that coffee has the lowest exposure to aeration while providing still an air to flow in. Coffee is ideally stored in a cool and dry area that doesn’t incur moisture at all.

One misunderstood way of storage for coffee beans is placing it in a refrigerator to prevent spoilage. But this isn’t the best way to keep the coffee fresh and well-preserved. Also, extreme freezing allows the loss of its oil responsible in keeping the flavor. Storing coffee at extremely low temperatures will dry out all the natural oils in it. Airlock container is still the best place to keep your beans and keep them fresh for the longest time. Keeping coffee beans in an ideal location keeps it fresh and prolongs the prime state of its flavors.

There are several factors that combat the preservation of the coffee’s freshness. Light is one of the major enemies of keeping things fresh and properly stored. Thus, coffee should be kept in a dimmed area. Exposing coffee directly on lighted surfaces will accelerate the degeneration of the coffee oils in the beans and dull the flavor significantly. Another thing is moisture. Coffee beans are non-water soluble which is why there are coffee trails left after you have brewed them. This is why it has to be stored in an air locked container and in room temperature to keep it from accumulating moisture and drying out the bean oils. Of course as with any fresh product, the longer you keep something stored the more its quality and freshness will deteriorate. Ideally a good pack of coffee beans should be used up two weeks after it’s roasting if you have no plans of storing it for long term use. Coffee is unique compared to other organic consumables because it can be stored for an infinite time in the right storage conditions. The best way of storing coffee after you have roasted them is to put it in a bag which is not vacuum sealed. Coffee once roasted will release carbon dioxide which becomes its protection from the deteriorating.

The Advantages and Disadvantages of Drinking Coffee

The Advantages and Disadvantages of Drinking Coffee

Coffee is more than a beverage for some people, May it is as a satisfying agent or a facet of culture, no one truly understands how one learns to drink and enjoy every bit of it. With its popularity and cultural element, coffee became a topic of debate about whether or not it is healthy to be consumed. Several studies have tried to examine the full effects of consuming copious amounts of coffee to the human body. Although it is undeniable that coffee has become a cultural phenomenon that is part of the routine rituals for many consumers, research findings have brought up confounding evidence to support some prior claims to the negative effects to the human body of excessive coffee consumption. On the other hand, still there has been some advancement in understanding the health benefits of drinking coffee and how it can help its drinkers prolong life and battle specific diseases.

Coffee is considered as a beverage rich with helpful antioxidants. It contains chlorogenic acid and melanoidins which are potent antioxidants. Antioxidants are known to combat the signs of aging and promote cell repair. The many researches done to study about the totality of the effects of coffee has proven a lot of helpful advantages to the human body. It is said that regular coffee drinking helps to reduce the predisposition of developing Parkinson’s disease. Currently, studies are still being done to determine what causes this and potentially extract the coffee element to aid in the treatment of Parkinson’s. Also, the United States Nurses’ Health Study Initiative has published a paper on coffee drinking and its effects on potentially protecting patients against the onset of type 2 diabetes. This prospective research study has found out that controlled consumption of coffee lowers the risk of the development of type 2 diabetes in test subjects, which were women in the 30-40 age brackets. It is also mentioned that effects of coffee consumption was found out to help in lowering risk of kidney stone formation as well as increasing urinary output and prevention of crystallization of gallstone components such as calcium oxalate. Some studies also have shown the potential of coffee in protecting liver against cirrhosis. Careful research is still being made to have strong support with this data. Coffee also contains a potent neuro-stimulant compound known as caffeine. A sympathetic response will occur by manifesting alertness as the brain cortex is stimulated. Caffeine is similar chemical to theophylline which has been known to be effective in management of Asthma. Thus, serving as bronchodilator – helps to prevent constriction of airways during asthmatic episodes.

It is true that everything has pros and cons. The term “too much of something is bad enough” clearly applies to excessive coffee consumption. Some dangers in consuming excessive amounts of coffee have been noted. It has been in many controversial arguments about its effects on existing cardiovascular conditions and its potential to create one. Many clinical trials and studies have shown that excessive coffee consumption can significantly predispose one for cardiovascular compromise. In many cardiovascular related researches, chemical components diterpenes cafesol and kahweol which are found in coffee have been identified to greatly increase the risk of coronary heart failure as well as the cholesterol stimulating effects of diterpenes have been outlined. Excess coffee consumption has also been cited to accelerate the production of plasma homocysteine in the circulatory system which increases the risk for coronary heart disease exponentially. Low density lipoprotein is considered as one of the most dangerous forms of cholesterol in the body and is consequentially increased by a copious consumption of coffee. There have also been studies that excessive coffee consumption could lead to the deterioration of cardiovascular vessels and its ability to facilitate circulation.

Although coffee has been into different controversies regarding its advantages and disadvantages, still it will always be one of the peoples’ favorite beverages. In regulated consumption, people can still enjoy drinking their coffees not too much bothered of its pros and cons.

Coffee Acidity - Breakdown of Coffee Acids Chart

Coffee Acidity - Breakdown of Coffee Acids Chart

Who wouldn’t love a coffee? Whether hot or cold, it never fails to satisfy one with its soothing aroma and sharp taste. Coffee is considered as a beverage which is very acidic in nature. The acidity of the coffee is said to be what makes its flavors as well as one of the factors that gives it its distinct signature. Its sharpness is relative to the proton interaction of acids within the coffee substance to the taste bud receptors found on the human tongue. The acidity of coffee is influenced by several factors such as the bean genus, the minerals used for growing the coffee beans, and the elevation of the growing grounds. The way of preparing and roasting the coffee also affects the acid concentration of the coffee. Also, studies have proven that the chemical agents present and its reaction during the roasting process also contribute in the acid level of the coffee. The acidic compounds found to be present in coffee are classified into aliphatic acids chlorogenic acids and phenolic acids. The following are the main acids found in coffee:

Volatile Alipathic Carboxylics: Formic, Propanois, Butanoic, Methylpropanoic, Pentanoic, 3-Mathylbutanoic, Hexanoic, Heptanoic, Octanoic, Nonanoic, Decanoic

Non-Volatile Alipathic Carboxylics: Pyruvic, Cis- and Trans-but-e-enoic, Cis- and Trans-2-methylbut-2-enoic, 3-methylbut-2-enoic, Methylpropenoic, Oxalic, Malonic, Succinic, 3-methylene butanedioic, Glutaric, Malic, Tartaric, Cis- and Trans-butenedioic, Cis- and Trans-methylbutenedioic, methylenebutanedioic, Citric, Propene-1, 2, 3-tricarboxylic

Chlorogenic: 3-monocaffeoylquinic acid, 4-monocaffeoylquinic acid, 5-monocaffeoylquinic acid, 3,4-dicaffeoylquinic acid, 3,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid, 4,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid, 3-feruloylquinic acid, 4-feruloylquinic acid, 5-feruloylquinic acid, 3,4-p-coumaroylquinic acid, 3,5-p-coumaroylquinic acid, 4,5-p-coumaroylquinic acid

Phenolic: Quinic, Ferulic, and Caffeic

These chemicals found in coffee have reaction effects that cause the acid level increase. Another, heat is also said to be a contributory factor in acid concentration within coffee. Some clinical studies have also concluded that the acidity of coffee can result from a relationship between heat, particle solubility and extraction. Elevated temperatures (generally at 220°C) have been observed to cause the destruction of specific amino acids during the roasting process. These amino acids play an important role in the aromatization of coffee during the pre-phases of the roasting.

Although a lot of clinical studies have done well to research about acid components and acidity of coffee, still no conclusive evidence points to the influence of acid derivatives in contributing to the perceived acidity experience in drinking coffee. Because of the multifaceted chemical makeup and chemical reactions that occur in the preparation of coffee, it is difficult to pinpoint the exact pathology and acidic components that produce the perceived acidity in coffee as a beverage.
